If you have always wanted to explore the world beneath the waves, there’s no better time than now to take the plunge. Island Scuba teaches the PADI Open Water Diver course which is the world’s most popular and recognized scuba course. By completing the course you will have an international certification to dive to 18 meters with a buddy anywhere in the world.
We offer the highest quality training with experienced instructors and small classes seasoned with a lot of patience. From November to April we are based in Mount Lavinia just south of Colombo at La Voile Blanche Restaurant in Mount Lavinia (off Hotel Road) so all our training is conducted in the area. The restaurant is also a great place to kick back and chill after a day’s diving with a beer or a limejuice and take in some spectacular sunsets. Our east coast location will be announced shortly for the May to October period.
The course is split up into three components. Theory or knowledge development, confined water (pool sessions) and two days of diving with two dives each.
The course can be completed in 3-4 days and if you are living locally we structure our courses so that people can complete the course over consecutive weekends during the Colombo season. During the east coast season we have a pool training option in Colombo so you can come to Passikuda just for the open water dives.
The theory will take around 3 hours or so to go over with our instructor if you have completed everything prior to arriving at the dive center. We use online manuals and videos so you can do all your reading and knowledge reviews at home. This makes going over the theory section at the center go much faster. After completing the theory (or at least the first three chapters) we then have the pool session where the instructor will show you the skills required to be an Open Water Diver in a safe and controlled environment.
This is followed by the two days of diving with 4 training dives. Our boat leaves around 8.30am and the dives will be done by around 12.00pm. As the open water dives require significant briefings we as that you are the dive center by 7.30am. Most of our training dives are done on our house reef but if conditions allow and we have access, we will try and finish the course off on one of two wrecks, the Panadura wreck or the T.Sierra.
Your last step will be the final exam and you will then have your PADI Open Water Certificate! Please note that we do care about how good a diver you are so you may need to do some extra pool work and dives if required.
Our course costs includes book, PADI fees, gear rental and everything. Our classes are capped at 4 per class so we can ensure quality and personal service.
We have weekday discounts, group discounts available so please get in touch.
